Marie - a full life, lived to the full

Born  Marie Louise Aplin  on 24 March 1925 in Rackenford, Devon. Father, Fred, ran the village bakery and  Marie was the fourth child of his and  her beloved mother, Clara. The family moved to Bristol in the early 1930's.  Never shy of  taking  the lead,  Marie was supervising  cafeterias by her late teens. In 1947, when working as a Restaurant Manageress in the Odeon Kingswood she met and married the handsome Assistant Cinema manager, Gwyn Lloyd. After finding a flat in Redland, the couple moved to Bedminster Down which became Marie's home for over 50 years. She resumed her career in the 1970's, first as a shop assistant before quickly becoming a concession shop manageress - a role in which she excelled for the best part of 20 years. She graced the floors of Lewis's, Debenhams and latterly Homeworld selling the wares of the some of the most notable manfacturers of Fine China, Porcelain, Crystal Glass and Cutlery. A stickler for detail, her books like her display shelves were immaculate. She managed to achieve the very difficult balance between being firm but fair and fun. Widowed far too soon, Marie was the stalwart of her extended family, always relied upon by her mother and siblings and the provider of countless family meals and celebrations. She was the main carer for her mother in her later years and the rock upon which her family was built.  In retirement, Marie spent most of her time with her family. She was a devoted mother,  mother-in-law, grandmother  and  great-grandmother, so very proud of her family and much loved by them all.  Her incredible determination ensured that she retained her independence and self-reliance for as much was possible.  Her  resiliance though was undermined by illness in the last few months of her life and after suffering a series of strokes, she passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Friday 24th February. Much loved, much respected, much cherished, she will be greatly missed by friends and family. But more importantly, she was with us and guided us.
