Accessibility Statement for Memorial Pages

Last updated: June 24, 2025

1. Commitment to Accessibility

At Rapid Data, we are committed to making digital memorial services inclusive and accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. The Memorial Pages platform is currently undergoing structured improvements to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.

2. Conformance Status

The Memorial Pages are currently partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. A platform-wide audit has been completed, and compliance efforts are being implemented through an active development roadmap. Work is currently focused on the Home Page, addressing critical issues related to structure, navigation, and interaction.

3. Areas Addressed (Completed & In Progress)

Completed:

  • An investigative audit across the Memorial Pages platform, identifying issues related to semantic structure, navigation, and screen reader compatibility.

Currently being addressed:

  • Keyboard navigation and focus visibility on the home page.
  • Logical heading structures and semantic HTML.
  • Color contrast for text and UI elements.
  • Correct labeling of form elements and actionable items.
  • Improved ARIA usage and markup for robustness.

These efforts are tracked in the Jira epic [#TNO-587] WCAG Compliance, with tasks divided across the four WCAG principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.

4. Planned Future Work

The following areas are scheduled for remediation in upcoming sprints:

  • Gallery pages – Evaluate alternative text, keyboard focus, and ARIA markup.
  • Flower shop and donation flows – Ensure proper tab order, labeling, and keyboard handling.
  • Ceremony & Memorial registration views – Improve clarity, focus handling, and accessibility of messaging.
  • System menu and profile interactions – Standardize navigation and ensure correct heading usage.
  • Search interfaces and start page views – Address structure, contrast, and label clarity for the memorial pages
  • Remaining components – Ensure global WCAG alignment across banners, modals, lists, and data inputs.

In parallel, Rapid Data is coordinating the rollout of a common accessibility QA tool across all teams to standardize how WCAG compliance is measured and validated.

5. Accessibility Features Implemented

Based on completed investigations and current sprint actions, the following accessibility improvements are being implemented in The Memorial Pages:

  • Logical tab order and visible keyboard focus indicators
  • Semantic HTML and heading structures for clearer navigation
  • ARIA roles and labels on key UI components
  • Alt text on meaningful images
  • Consistent labeling of form fields and buttons

Additional verification, including zoom/reflow testing and screen reader validation, is planned in collaboration with QA once a unified testing tool is in place.
